DAY EIGHT and NINE: Markets, Meals, and Movie Nights

Two more quiet days, while preparing for Yoshio and Tamiko to come over to our apartment on Wednesday. School has been going well, and we have been able to get familiar with two of the local supermarkets.

We have been enjoying trying out Japanese recipes. On Monday we had fried rice and gyoza (also popular in the U.S.), and on Tuesday we had gyudon, which was delicious.

We have finished off all the snacks that were left to us when we moved in, and finished with the best for last (not that we knew it was the best, since we cannot read any of the packaging) It tasted like a peanut, popped in puffed corn, and powdered with curry seasoning. Yum!

Tuesday greeted us with a storm, and I enjoyed listening to the thunder and lightening. Watch this video if you want to listen to three minutes of Japanese rain, with a little bit of thunder at the end (once I started recording, all of the big crashing thunder paused until I was done. How polite).

Because of lingering jetlag, we have been having a hard time staying awake past six or seven. To help with this, we signed up for the free trial with Hulu, and we have been enjoying some family (minus Dad, who has to wake up early anyways so he can work during U.S. time) movie nights. Even with these, however, we can barely keep our eyes open past nine 😛

So friends, we are nearing the end of the second week. Tell us what you are up to! School and other yearly activities are starting up, so please comment below! We love reading you guys’ comments. Whichever of us is on the blog, always squeals whenever we see that someone has commented (just kidding, I am the only one that squeals. The boys just let everyone know calmly). If you can’t comment, then send us an email! We want to hear from you too! We miss and love you all!

    1. Thank you Dawn, I am so glad you are enjoying the blog! We are enjoying sharing our adventures with you.
So far we have only seen one full on craft store (they even had an entire kimono supplies section!). I do not know what Sashiko quilting is, but Mom says she does, and we will check the store out and let you know if we find anything. 🙂

  1. Oh I meant to ask if you have seen fabric stores? I am very interested in Sashiko style quilting, have several books on it and taken several classes… would love to hear what you think of it and if you see it.

  2. From Katelynn: Sounds like you’re having a fun time in Japan and there’s a lot of rain. It’s only rained once here and it’s still hot and dry. Ashley and I get to play in her outdoor kitchen a lot and swim. Although we’ve only swam once in the last week. I think your blog is a smart idea. I enjoy reading your posts.
From Ashley: Elias, it sounds like your trip to the mountain was fun. Are you all having a good time? I lost my tooth and now I’m missing both my front teeth. That’s all for now.

    1. Wow, sounds like yo guys are having fun! I am glad you are enjoying the blog 🙂 Ashley, awesome job losing your tooth! Is it hard to eat, or are you using super skills?

  3. I’m just getting caught up on the blog today. We’ve been rainy here in WA today as well! I’m not enjoying it, but I don’t love the rain and cold. I feel like an old lady saying this, but it makes my joints ache. Arthritis is no fun.

We started school up last Monday, so today is the start of our second week. We’re using a curriculum that is new to us, so there’s a bit of a learning curve. Today was probably the best day with it so far, and that’s mostly because I decided one book was too dry and we changed course a little bit.

Ohhh, Hannah, you’ll enjoy this! I finally found a great setup for photos for my business, so that’s streamlined the process a lot. I’m still on the hunt for the perfect set up for the jewelry storage though. I need to make a trip to the hardware store and start looking at prices and options.

Audrey is getting funnier with each passing day. There’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t have us rolling with laughter over something she’s said.

Keep up the great work with the blog posts. We really do love reading them and keeping up with your amazing adventure. ❤️

    1. Rain is nice to look at, and listen to, but once it affects my comfort, *BAM* I’m done.
I am fully supportive of throwing out dry books. Maybe you could throw it out into the rain? Learning should be fascinating, like watching how seemingly harmless water, can destroy a seemingly well made book… 😉

Ooooh! I can’t wait to see your new set up for photos! As you know, reorganizing spaces is one of my favorite things to do.

Tell Audrey I miss her! 🙂
